On Tuesday 28th June, we held our first ever live Thrive Money event entitled ‘How to Invest for your Dream Home’.
Thrive Money is our educational platform with a goal of providing financial education to as many young people as possible, so they have financial clarity and are empowered to make wise choices, plan for the future, and achieve holistic financial wellbeing.
Our co-founders Robert Caplan, First Wealth Financial Planning Director and Zanna Van Dijk, founder of Stay Wild Swim, are really passionate about the cause and with the help of the team, they are creating something brilliant.
On arrival at the live event, we were greeted with a giant banner which had the Thrive Logo plastered all over it. It was a brilliant picture opportunity throughout the evening and almost felt like you were on a Hollywood red carpet. Once we welcomed people in with a few drinks and small talk, we moved into the event room where the panel started.
Our panellists included James Caplan, managing director and mortgage broker at First Financial, Emma Fielding, Chartered Financial Planner here at First Wealth and Laura Whateley, author of the bestselling book Money: A User’s Guide. We covered all things property including types of mortgages, buying costs, having a plan and so much more. This was followed by our Q&A session, which was also great, as it gave people the opportunity to ask questions related to their own personal circumstances.
As always with Q&A sessions it can be difficult to predict how many people are happy to openly ask questions on their own personal experiences however, we had so many questions we ran over our allotted 20-minute slot! As our panellists were welcoming, approachable, and staying away from using jargon, we found that people were happy to speak up as it felt like a safe space and everyone who was there, was there for the same reason.
There were a wide range of questions people were asking but the common themes seemed to be around the future.
The issue we found with a lot of the answers to these is that it is completely unpredictable where you may be in the future. The most important thing is having a plan with goals and realising things can change but the overarching goal is X and this is how I plan to get there.
We had a brilliant turnout with almost 100 people eager to pick our panellists brains. It is so nice that we can start doing events like this again, considering the past 2 years, it almost seemed like live events were a thing of the past. It makes a huge difference having these events in person as the topic around finances is incredibly personal and when people can have the opportunity to speak to panellists directly and even ask them questions informally/outside of the panel discussion really has an impact.
Overall, it was a great evening filled with lots of informative chats, laughs and learning. This will definitely not be our last event and we will hopefully be doing a few more in the future. If this event is any marker for the future ones, Thrive Money will be a success.
